Case Study

A NYC event company was invisible to AI. A week later, every major platform could read it.

NYC Party Booth rents photo booths for weddings, corporate events, and parties across New York City. Good business, solid reviews, steady bookings. And when customers asked ChatGPT or Perplexity for photo booth recommendations in NYC, it simply did not exist. Not ranked low. Absent.

The problem: locked doors nobody knew about

The audit found that the website's platform was rejecting AI crawlers outright. When GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot came to read the site, the firewall turned them away before a single word of content was served. Every request from an AI platform hit a wall, while the site looked perfectly normal to human visitors and to Google.

Nobody had chosen this. It was a stack default, the same kind of silent blocking we later measured across the market in our study of 22,324 small business websites, where more than half of sites blocked at least one AI crawler.

The result was a hard ceiling on the business: AI platforms answer photo booth queries in New York every day, and they were recommending competitors because they physically could not read this client's site.

What we did

  1. Opened the doors with an edge routing layer. Because the underlying website platform could not stop blocking bots itself, we placed a routing layer in front of the site that recognizes 20+ AI crawlers and serves them the content directly, while human visitors keep getting the site exactly as before.
  2. Gave the crawlers something worth reading. A dedicated AI content index: crawlable pages covering the services, pricing context, service areas, and frequently asked questions, written in plain quotable language.
  3. Added structured data. Machine readable markup describing the business, its offerings, and its location, so platforms get facts rather than guesses.
  4. Published the AI navigation file (llms.txt) and submitted an expanded sitemap, so every platform knows what exists and where to find it.
  5. Verified everything. We re-tested every crawler against the live site and confirmed each one could reach and read the content before calling the project done.

The outcome

Today every major AI platform can read, understand, and cite the business. The doors that were closed are verifiably open, and the owner has already fielded new inquiries that started with an AI recommendation rather than a Google search.

That is the honest shape of GEO results: first you become eligible, then the recommendations compound as platforms revisit and learn. We keep measuring monthly so the trend is visible instead of anecdotal.

What this means for your business

If a healthy, well reviewed business can be completely invisible to AI platforms because of a setting its owner never chose, the first question worth answering is whether your site has the same problem. That check is part of the free audit, and it takes us 48 hours to get you the full picture.
