GEO vs SEO for a small business
SEO ranks your pages in a list of links. GEO makes AI tools name your business and quote your pages. This page shows the differences and what to do first.
The short answer
SEO helps your pages rank in a list of links. GEO helps AI tools name your business and quote your pages in an answer. A small business should do both, but they are different jobs with different checks.
Side by side
- Goal. SEO: a high place in a list of search results. GEO: a mention or a link inside an AI answer.
- Who reads your site. SEO: Googlebot and Bingbot. GEO: AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and the search tools behind AI answers.
- What the user sees. SEO: ten links and the user picks one. GEO: one written answer, often with a short list of businesses.
- What helps most. SEO: good pages, links from other sites, a fast site. GEO: open access for AI crawlers, plain facts in the page source, structured data, answer pages, and the same business details on other sites.
- How you check it. SEO: rank and clicks in Search Console. GEO: ask the AI tools real customer questions and note if your business is named. See how we measure AI visibility.
What they share
Both need a site that loads, pages that state facts clearly, and a business that other sites describe the same way. Work on one often helps the other. But a page can rank well in Google and still be invisible to an AI tool. A site that shows its content only after JavaScript runs is one example, because AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
What a small business should do first
- Step 1. Check your robots.txt file and your firewall for blocks on AI crawlers. Read Can ChatGPT read my website?
- Step 2. Check that your key facts are in the page source: what you sell, where you work, how to contact you.
- Step 3. Write one page for each question that customers ask.
- Step 4. Ask the AI tools your customer questions each month and write down the result.

Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of search results. GEO aims to make AI tools name your business and quote your pages in the answers they write. The two jobs share some work, such as clear pages and a fast site, but they have different goals and different checks.
Will allowing AI crawlers hurt my Google ranking?
No. Google ranking depends on Googlebot, which is a separate crawler. Allowing AI crawlers does not change how Googlebot reads your site.
Do I need GEO if I already pay for SEO?
AI search is a separate area from SEO, and many SEO services do not check it. A short audit shows if AI tools can read your site. You can keep your SEO service. We work next to it and do not change its work.
Which should a small business do first?
Start with access. If AI crawlers cannot open your site, nothing else helps. Then make sure your business facts are clear in plain text. Both steps also help normal search.
